About the Dmitry Gvishiani
Dmitry Gvishiani (November 5, 1978 – September 1, 1999) was a cadet at the Military Academy of the Republic of Belarus. He was awarded the Order "For Personal Courage".
On August 28, 1999, Dmitry was returning from home to the capital. He was traveling with his classmates on passenger train #660 Brest-Minsk. Late in the evening, not far from Drogichin, the locomotive suddenly caught fire. The passenger train made an emergency stop at 22:50 near the Lipniki station. The cadets did not lose their heads. Dmitry Gvishiani and Roman Kunda grabbed fire extinguishers and ran to put out the fire, while Vadim Gritsuk and Viktor Chumansky tried to stop the panic and helped passengers get out of the cars. Dmitry tried to control the fire, but at that moment a powerful explosion thundered - the batteries built into the niche of the locomotive's fuel tank exploded. Then the locomotive's fuel tanks. A wave of burning fuel washed over Dmitry Gvishiani, who was closest to the locomotive. The injured cadet with severe burns was urgently flown to Minsk by helicopter to the 432nd Main Military Clinical Hospital.
Dmitry Gvishiani died from the burns he sustained on the night of August 31 to September 1, 1999.
For exceptional courage and personal bravery shown in rescuing people during an emergency, cadet Dmitry Gvishiani was posthumously awarded the Order "For Personal Courage".
